Toshiba BDX2700 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) for $159.26

Overall, this is a pretty good BD player. It sets up easily. The wireless is very convenient since I don't know many people who have an Ethernet connection in their living room. However it does occasionally shut down and must be unplugged from and replugged into the wall. Also, I do not yet own and HDTV (someday, but I got this mostly to stream NetFlix and also to upgrade my old DVD player) and when I initially hooked this up, I got no display. I called Toshiba (before I got ready to send it back) and they explained to me that the first time it is turned on the resolution is set to Auto HDMI, which a standard TV cannot display. I had to manually change it to 480i and it was fine. Then I had problems setting up the screen size. It kept wanting to play everything (DVDs, TV, and NetFlix) in 4:3 (full screen) ratio. It took me a while to figure that out. I tried every setting, then realized that when I changed the setting, I had to reset (unplug) the unit. That was annoying. Another problem is with VuDu. Some movies on VuDu freeze up on this unit. You get half way through and can go no further. And if you rewind, it stops at the exact same spot. This has only happened with one of the about 5 movies I have rented from VuDu. I called VuDu and was told this problem is specific to this unit and that Toshiba needs to update the firmware. Of course, when I contacted Toshiba, they blamed VuDu.

Missed it by THAT much! - Gary Marotta - Lisle, Illinois United States
The Toshiba BDX2700 has superb image, upscaling and sound quality. WiFi setup takes about a minute. So why the 3 stars? Toshiba acknowledges one known flaw in the unit--but no current fix. The unit freezes in the on position; freezes in the off position. Neither the remote control nor the control buttons on the unit (including the power buttons) can unfreeze the BDX2700. The only solution is to unplug the unit; wait a bit; plug the unit back in to restore normal function. OK for couch potatoes who need the exercise--but discouraging for those of us who just want to enjoy the movie. (Amazon.com provided me with two units that displayed the identical problem virtually out of the box until Toshiba finally acknowledged the problem. Needless to say, the 3rd unit Amazon is sending to me is not another BDX2700.)

JUNK - D.C. - MA
This unit performed flawlessy for 4 weeks, then I began experiencing all of the problems seen in other reveiws. Will not power up without unplugging, cannot connect to my wireless router (when every other wireless device in the house is working just fine), after resetting when it does connect there is no sound from any VUDU movies, will not load blu-ray or standard discs. Toshiba really dropped the ball on this piece of junk. Of course, its just past the return window for Amazon, and I'll be dealing with Toshiba which I here is no picnic. Do not buy this product!! You have been warned.

For the Same $$$ get the LG 570 & smile... - M. Connelly - Ohio
This is a nice player. Played the few blus and SDVD I tried and played them well. Tho it was noisy (the drive) on startup. Just a matter of time be4 that needs replacing. Then the thing would lock up and/or freeze. Wi-fi reception outstanding. Never a dropout. Would be worth goofing around with for a player, but I paid 0 and it was returned within 2 weeks. Amazon was superb about it all. The BDX2700 only has 4 apps too. Get the LG instead for the same or less price, twice as many apps and a better functioning player. I love mine. Looking to get another player for the living room now to compliment my top of the line HD DVD player the A35. But the BD570 plays everything, is fast loading and responding, just an all around better purchase. They don't get much better than this. I would love an Oppo but too expensive and I guarantee that I would never see a difference in playback. I waited years (literally) to find the right blu-ray player and get in the HD game with both feet and the LG is by far the player of choice. So get yours before Christmas comes and the price goes up.
