On screen menus in tiny font, we cannot read them, poorly designed. - ThomasH - Santa Clara, CA USA
With DVD's from 3 'regions' our options are fewer: We have to hunt for a multi region device. Our old Yamakawa has died and so we looked for a replacement, of course now supporting the Blue Ray disks as well. Our choice was this Sharp, because they have also quite acclaimed flat screen TV's and we thought, maybe we will switch the brand and our next will be also a Sharp.

Where this device falls short, bordering on "outrageous" or "completely unusable" are its onscreen menus and messages. For example, when DVD is in, press "Setup", a huge black box in a white frame appears with a tiny, tiny, tiny string of letters. We both with my wife crawled to the TV and tried to guess what the heck the content is. We made than a digital image of it and deciphered on the PC that is says "Cannot operate".

This "Cannot operate" appear quite often. Equally unusable are the total or remaining times and segment informations. In our Yamakawa we could display a top line in a nice readable font, and for example make a choice to watch rest some other time. Here the Sharp displays a light blue box rather than a top or bottom line, and its content is mostly unused blue. The font is again so tiny that we barely can make up what it says.

I suspect that these menus look fine on a 40-50 inch screen? Maybe someone could corroborate? Whereas we being "non TV folks", we dread to cope with the remodel project to get a new TV the necessary furniture space and still use the older TV and run into this issue. Be it as it may, this device is driven by software, it would a child's play and good ergonomics to offer options and... to test in all possible uses. The Setup menu its even more bizarre. They use partly a gargantuan font to show the selected menu item, and than switch to their tiny barely readable one. Ridiculous. At least we know, they know that font can be bigger and can be selected.

The menus are not the only problem here, the entire remote control and operations are quite annoying. For example, I pressed eject to get the DVD out. The drawer has opened, so far so good. Than I pressed power off. Wrong decision! Sharp has closed the drawer before I reached the device, and not even pressing of the button on the device convinced it to open it up! And so I pressed power on, even than the device was booting for over a minute and not before the end of the boot it allowed me to open the drawer and to take the DVD out.

I give Sharp designers the Golden Palm of Stupidity in design, we debate a return and we will very carefully demo all TV's of this manufacturer before even touching their products.
