Great... until it died after 7 months - Adam Barnard -
Bought this player at the end of December 2009. My first Blu-ray player, and did online research prior to purchasing it. Loved the Netflix capability, and the speed at which it read the Blu-ray discs. However, starting in late July 2010 it started giving errors when trying to read discs (Blu-ray, DVD, and CD), and now it won't read any discs (it either says "Disc read error" or simply "No disc". Obviously I have tried powering it off and on, unplugging, and resetting it, but nothing helped. Did further Internet research and found that other people have had similar failures after only 3+ months. Very disappointing. Will not purchase an LG player again.

LG BD390 no longer plays ANY DVDs - "No Disc" error - J. Wemer -
I bought this LG BD390 in October 2009. Worked well playing Blu-rays and DVDs until last week (7/20/2010). It will no longer recognize any of my DVDs - even brand new ones that have never been opened or played. I started getting a "No Disc" in the upper left-hand corner of the TV with DVDs immediately after closing the tray [with a DVD in the tray]. The DVDs were at least spun as DVD position was changed when opening the tray after receiving the message. It will play all Blu-ray movies fine (still has some issues with Avatar, though). I have the BD390 connected to my network and have the latest firmware version (08.08.531). Contacted LG support to see if there was anything I could do to reset it or troubleshoot and "Gustavao" was not all that helpful. His "support" consisted of asking me to update the firmware version after telling him that I already had the latest version and his cut & paste of what to do with the product ( blah blah). "He" ended the chat session about 30 seconds after his "Hello?" - I had been reading his instructions when he was more than happy to end the session ("excellent service"? I don't think so....):

Gustavao: Hello Jason Xxxxx. Welcome to LG Electronics! How may I provide you with excellent service today?
Jason Xxxxx: My LG bd390 has stopped playing DVDs. It will play Blu-rays but no DVDs... This just started on Tuesday of last week. Was wondering if there is something I should check that may resolve this? I have tried about 40 undamaged DVDs... It has the latest firmware version (08.08.531 from April 2010).
Gustavao: I see.
Gustavao: Have you tried updating the unit to the latest firmware?
Jason Xxxxx: it says it has the latest firmware version.
Gustavao: Let me get you a link
Jason Xxxxx: I actually tried a DVD it had played the day before it stopped working and it will give me a message that just says "No Disc" in the upper left hand corner of my TV.
Gustavao: Because if there was an issue with the lense, the blu rays would not play either.
Gustavao: [...]
Jason Xxxxx: Blu-rays are working fine in the player...
Gustavao: Search under drivers and software
Gustavao: Try doing this update as stated in the instructions you would be able to get here
Gustavao: Once done, check to see if it helped.
Gustavao: If it in fact still does not work you would want to send it in to us so our techs could check the unit out for you.
Gustavao: It is most likely software related.
Jason Xxxxx: my bd390 is connected to the internet... i tested the connection, it says it is connected, and has the latest firmware version.
Gustavao: Ok.
Gustavao: hmm.
Gustavao: When was the unit purchased exaclty?
Gustavao: Exactly?
Jason Xxxxx: October 2009
Gustavao: Do you have the original purchase receipt still?
Jason Xxxxx: yes
Gustavao: In regards to repairing the unit, first we would send you free shipping labels via email, which you should get it in around 24 to 48 hours. Then you would want to send in the unit, with a copy of the sales receipt. In regards to the payment you would have to ways to pay for the labor, either through credit card or money order. I will also provide you with a case number that should be written on each side on the outside of the box. Please do not send in accessories with the unit (remote control, cables, etc). The labor payment should be in the facility before the technicians start working on the unit and the "repair and return" department will contact you in case there are parts needed for the repair so you can send the money in for the parts if you would like to repair it, if there are no parts needed for the repair, they will go ahead and repair it and send it back to you. This is in case your unit is no longer under the 1 year warranty for parts. For credit card payments you will need to contact our customer service department to the 1-800-243-0000 so you can get in contact with the "repair and return" department specific department that will take your payment. For money order payments, you will need to send it to LG Electronics, Alabama Inc. P.O. Box 240007 Huntsville, AL. 35813-6407. The process should take between 5 -7 business days after we receive the unit. Labor would cost , if you wish to pay via credit card you would need to call in to 1-800-243-0000.
Gustavao: This is the process if you would like to send it in.
Gustavao: In this case since the unit is still under part warranty, the parts should be covered. But you would still have to pay for labor fees since labor warranty was for 90 days.
Jason Xxxxx: ok... will you e-mail me those instructions with the case#?
Gustavao: That would be emailed by the repair and return department.
Gustavao: In from 24 to 48 business hours you should receive the email.
Gustavao: If you would want to send it in, we would need to set it up first.
Gustavao: Hello?
Gustavao: I apologize it appears I may have lost my connection with you. I will remain on the line for approximately 2 minutes before exiting the chat. If you have any additional questions feel free to contact us back via Live Chat or you may call 800-243-0000. Thank you for choosing LG Live Chat.
Gustavao: Unfortunately due to a lack of response your chat session will be ending. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again via Live Chat or by calling 800-243-0000. Thank you for choosing LG Electronics. We appreciate your business. Have a great day!
Notice: Gustavao has exited the chat session.

So... he notes that Labor is 90 days. I believe I read in one of the reviews someone was told or understood labor to be covered for only 30 days. I don't feel that great about paying + - for shipping. Basically 0 for something I paid 9 for 9 months ago. A terrible and disappointing purchase even if Blu-rays work, for now. I still have two Sony DVD players I have had for 7 and 4 years that play all of these DVDs fine - not to mention the DVD players in both my Volvo XC-90 and Mercedes ML350.

Correction... This BD390 will no longer play the following Blu-rays and receive a "Check Disc" error:
Into the Blue
Fool's Gold
The Edge

All are flawless (no prints, smudges, dust, or scratches) and previously worked fine. I only have 24 Blu-rays - the others worked fine with initial (until it shows "Blu-ray Disc" on the screen in the upper left-hand corner) load times from 10 seconds to about 35 seconds.

AVOID LG Blue Ray Players - LG stinks -
About 10 months ago I bought an LG BD390. It was an expensive unit. I thought I was getting a quality player. I had a good DVD player, so it only played a couple new Blue Rays and no DVDs. It has played less than 10 movies. It is basically new.

The unit will no longer read either Blue Ray discs or DVDs. The unit attempts to read the disc and then displays "no disc". LGs customer support & warranty are basically worthless.

I see many others on the net with similar issues.

I have had DVD players last for years, the reliability of this unit is unacceptable. Save your money and avoid LG!

Unit broke after less than six months and infrequent use - Alexandgus -
I purchased this unit at Bestbuy. The setup was relatively easy, although the remote is a pain, and it would be nicer if the remote was lighted. After less than six months, the unit will no longer play any disks. I phoned LG and a technician there walked me through an evaluation of the unit and said that it would have to come in for repair. The unit still works as a receiver for Netflix but anything that goes into the disk drive (the Blu-Ray player) is not recognized. The movie function is "grayed out" on the menu screen. There is nothing in the manual and nothing online about this problem but I definitely had the notion after talking with the technician that they have lots of problems with this issue of the Blu-ray disk portion of the unit breaking down. Considering what I paid, it seems to me that this unit should last longer before it breaks down. I didn't get an extended warranty, so the cost for repair is at least .00. The unit has a one year warranty, but so what? It shouldn't be in need of repair this quickly, especially since it isn't used all that often.

My recommendation: look for another brand.

The BD70V allows for premium 1080p up-conversion for all video formats.

VIERA CAST
VIERA CAST technology is now available in Panasonic's 2009 Blu-ray players. The internet enabled technology lets the consumer access the internet without the need of either an external box or a PC and enjoy entertainment from sites like Amazon VOD, YouTube, Google's Picasa Web Album, Bloomberg and more. The DMP-BD70V also includes an SD Memory card slot and USB slot, so you can view and share both digital still images and HD video recorded with an HD camcorder in the AVCHD format.

4:4:4 Technology
In order to produce the ultimate picture quality, Panasonic's Blu-ray players employ high precision 4:4:4 signal technology, which working in tandem with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus processes each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the horizontal direction, to compliment vertical direction processing. P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD) is another technology that contributes to the superior picture quality of the Blu-ray players. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel. Panasonic's Blu-ray players further utilize 16-level motion detection to categorize the image motion of each pixel into one of 16 levels; diagonal processing to detect diagonals and correct the pixels accordingly; 1080p up-conversion to up-convert content recorded in the 480i/p or 720p format to 1080p. The Blu-ray players also provide 1080/24p output, thereby reproducing cinema images from a Blu-ray Disc and DVD in their original 24p form with no need for conversion. This allows the user to enjoy cinema images in the same format used in cinema with a 1080/24p compatible TV.

Lower Power Consumption
Panasonic's 2009 Blu-ray players use Auto Power Stand-By, a function that automatically turns off the player when you return to TV operation using the VIERA Link menu. In addition, the Stand-by Power Save automatically turns off the player's Quick Start function. When VIERA is turned on, Quick Start also turns on. In addition, the development of the UniPhier single chip LSI makes it possible to pack an entire video signal processing circuit onto a single chip. This helps lower power consumption, reduces the number of parts needed and allows for a more compact design.

Old meets new - V. Ives - USA
We bought this combo dvd/vhs blu-ray because we still have some old VHS tapes we didn't want to get rid of. It works great, is easy to use, and was a great price. We have a Panasonic TV also so the 2 pieces recognize each other which makes it even nicer.

Early failure - Allan Lindsay - Oak Creek, WI USA
Older model, worked fairly well, however DVD mode failed within 90 days. Has to be sent to Texas for repair or replacement. Viera Cast will not access Netflix or Hulu. No firmware upgrade planned to correct per Panasonic press releases. Player remote does not control Panasonic HD TV well and visa versa , requiring you to keep both remotes handy.

Please reconsider!!! - Aelyweeks -
VHS worked great at first, but after a month or so, the tracking started to give out. It takes about 10 minutes of adjusting to get the tracking to work. DVD/Blu-ray player is very limited to store bought DVDs and Blu-ray discs. I could not play home recordings on there...I would not recommend this product.

Check Out Sound Improvement Disc - SID

Sound Improvement Disc - SID Review

Finally a way to get my blue oyster cult cds to sound as good as my other cds-I have a SACD- upscaeling dvd player- I was VERY impressed with the picture I got using this- its almost blu-ray quality- although I bought it to see if it improved the sound of my CDs- it does. My system sounded great already- but when I play a disc w then w/O this I can tell the differance- works great I LOVE IT- it will instantly upgrade all your discs.

Sound Improvement Disc - SID Overview

The SOUND IMPROVEMENT DISC (SID) improves the sound of CD, SACD, DVD–A and DVD sound and picture. The Sound Improvement Disc is an accesory that is placed on top of the CD, results in a better separation of instruments and a much clearer reproduction of the voice. The SID disc has a special matt finish on one side and this side is placed towards the CD label so that the stray laser light is absorbed, the green colour changing the red light of the laser into black, thus neutralising it. The SID is only 0.3 mm thick and 2.8 gramm in weight so it will fit in virtually every player.

Check Out Samsung BD-C6800 1080p 3D Blu-ray Disc Player for $219.00

Samsung BD-C6800 1080p 3D Blu-ray Disc Player Review

This player is screaming fast. The upconvert produces an excellent image quality. This is my second player. I bought a Panasonic Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black) back in October and even though the image quality is excellent, it is very slow. This Samsumg player opens the tray almost immediately after you turn it on. It takes less than 30 seconds from the moment you put the disc into the tray and the moment you start watching the movie. The Panasonic I have on the other hand takes approximately 3-4 minutes.
The tray cover mechanism is pretty slick. But if you have young children around it will not survive long. The design is too fragile and will break at the first mishandling.

The only word of caution is that I suggest updating the firmware by downloading the file from Samsung's site to a USB stick formatted using fat16 or fat32. Trying to update over the air is risky and can cause the unit to be bricked if there's a glitch during the upgrade process.

WORTHLESS player from TERRIBLE company! - Stephen T. Crye - Earth
How I with I could give this player AND Samsung negative stars! I warn you, NEVER, EVER buy not only this pile of cr*p BD-P1590, but ANYTHING from Samsung. I've had several horrible tech support and customer service experiences from Samsung over the last few years, but this one has pushed me over the edge.

Bought the unit at Xmas last year. Seemed to work ok, we have not used it much. Connected to a Samsung 32" LCD TV. Recently purchased Avatar on Blu-ray, sat down to enjoy it. When we loaded the disk it complained it used the "latest technology" and our player might have a problem, but after chugging a while it finally loaded. We watched for about an hour, then we needed to do some other things, so we stopped the movie and turned off the player. When we tried to watch again, this time after the complaint that the movie might not play, and the system displayed a dire warning about needing a firmware upgrade.

So, I innocently went to the Samsung site, found a new firmware upgrade from May 31, 2010. (BEv2.09_100519_BDP1600_XAA.RUF) Used the USB method to do the upgrade. All seemed to go well, and it chugged through the various steps. But, it never finished, just stayed stuck for three hours on the "do not power off" step 3. Finally I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in, but as expected, it is a brick now. I then looked on line, and see that many, many people have had the same exact problem!

Phone calls and chat with Samsung tech support reminded me how pathetic and unhelpful they are. Essentially, because I am past the 3-month "labor" portion of the warranty, I will need to pay MORE than the purchase price of ~ 0.00 to get this steaming pile of fecal matter fixed. No matter that their firmware upgrade killed it, they could care less - I am SOL.

Tomorrow I will try to sweet-talk Walmart into letting me return it - sometimes they are cool.

I will never, ever, EVER touch another Samsung product. I urge everyone to STAY AWAY - FAR AWAY from Samsung. I've been burned by their phones, their MP3 players, and now this. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me four times - shame on ME."

I don't often pan a product or a company, but I am obligated to warn the public about this.

Great Price Marantz BD7003 for

Marantz BD7003 Blu-ray Player Review

The BD7003 is a Blu-ray player for the performance minded video/audio enthusiast. The unit also may not be for those still using older receivers/processors, it has no onboard decoding or multi-channel analog outputs. To clarify the 7003 will work with older receivers with either optical or coaxial digital audio inputs you just won't be able to take advantage of the HD audio formats which are as large of an improvement in audio as HD is to video. See more on this later.

Let's get the bad out of the way, picture quality would have easily scored a five, as well as looks and ease of use, though I found the manual some what confusing, but what made me have to give the 7003 a four is lack of features in a player at this price, the unit is still slow loading discs, skipping chapters, and the disc drive is loud. I can hear the disc drive during loading making those grinding sounds with the entertainment center door closed and me on my sofa about 11 to 12 feet away.

My previous BD player was the Samsung BD-P1200 which got excellent picture quality reviews due to the Silicon Optics video chip set. I began to look for a replacement when the unit showed some disc incompatibility and would not bitstream the HD audio formats. I was a bit worried about being able to find a player with the picture performance of the 1200. I also borrowed my daughter's Samsung BD-P1500 for a while since it did bitstream. I had an opportunity to audition a BD-7003 in my home. While I was hesitant based on price and features I brought one home any way to see how it did with my Marantz AV8003.

First off let me say that all Blu-ray pictures are NOT the same. I found this out when putting the 1500 in place of my 1200, the picture quality of the 1500 was not as good. It was also evident when I put the 7003 in place. The BD-7003 has a stunningly good picture both HD and standard DVD. To my surprise the 7003's picture was more vibrant and vivid than the 1200. The 7003 gave the blackest blacks I've ever seen and images seemed sharper with more background detail. I was also please to see that the increase in sharpness and vivid picture held true on standard DVD as well. With the 7003 fine detail was easier to see. I was able to make out detail in eyes I've never seen before. On one movie some torches were burning and the shades of color in the flames made them look very real. I am very impressed with the picture quality performance of the BD-7003.

I like the remote, it is comfortable to hold and the main buttons are logically laid out at the bottom. You have your <, stop, play, > sort of arched with the Pause below them centered. Above that is skip chapter forward and back, the buttons are a different shape. Not far above that is the cross pad and enter. Above that are buttons you probably wont' use much. Set up was easy, the On Screen Display showed a chart similar to what you see in the manual. I think I changed one setting for audio and off I was. The remote shouldn't give anyone a problem in the dark. The 7003 has the only remote I've ever seen with a separate button for power on and off.

A feature well worth mentioning and greatly missed on most Blu-ray players is the Memory Stop. If any interruptions where I have to Pause or Stop the movie just hit Play on the BD-7003 and I can pick up where I left off. Before if I Paused too long or hit Stop on accident I had to go through the movie looking for the closest point where I left off.

The 7003 does have Bonus View for picture in a picture or seeing special features on the disc if this is your thing. It also has Zoom and Angle to play with. The 7003 also was able to play a Blu-ray disc that would not play in either of the Samsung players. And my 1200 was up to date on firmware.

In order to take advantage of HD audio sound, Dolby Tru-HD and DTS-MA, you will need a receiver or preamp with the decoders built in as the BD-7003 does not have them. It should also be noted that these HD audio formats are only accessible with HDMI connections as optical or coaxial digital connections are not compatible, from any unit, period. Bitstreaming these HD audio tracks to my AV8003 worked very well and sound quality was incredible. One thing to note is the manual does not mention DTS-MA but Marantz's website says the BD-7003 will bitstream it and in fact it does. After a short panic attack I was all better after dropping a disc in with DTS-MA and seeing the DTS Master Audio flash on the front of my processor.

To sort of sum things up, despite the short comings I mentioned, I love this player and highly recommend it if it fits into your system as it did mine. I would encourage anyone looking for a Blu-ray player to see the picture quality of this unit. It would be painful but after using the BD-7003 I probably would have paid the original retail of 9.00 but at 9.00 it's in line with most of the premium name brands.

Side notes:

1. I wondered why new Blu-ray players, even those that haven't hit the street yet, are coming out with only version 1.1 and no internet connectivity. The reason, theory, I found is the circuitry for internet connectivity can degrade performance of the unit. I've seen no white papers or tests but I did see the theory in print. Take it for what it's worth.

2. There are 3 levels of digital audio, one being what we are used to on standard DVD which is compressed to save space on the disc, two is a slightly higher bit rate available on Blu-ray via optical or coaxial digital connection referred to as "Dolby Plus" or "DTS-HD", third is lossless or true to the original movie soundtrack master formats called Dolby Tru-HD or DTS-MA (Master Audio). To take advantage of the 3rd level the signal has to be passed via HDMI to your receiver, the decoding can happen in the player and be sent LPCM. Or bitstreamed to be decoded internally by a receiver or processor with the decoders. You can also use Multi-channel analog connections if included on your Blu-ray player with built in decoding for the HD formats and have a compatible receiver with these inputs. One note about Multi-channel analog or LPCM where using the Blu-ray decoder, the player will need to also include several different speaker set up features as on a HT receiver in order for sound to be properly balanced and set. This is another problem I had with the BD-P1200, it only gave me adjustment for speaker size, large or small, no volume level, no crossovers, no delay etc. So while the sound of the HD audio was good it was also untamed.

For more information on the various formats the Dolby Labs and DTS websites are good resources and even have speaker placement diagrams.

The BD7003 creates a full High Definition 1080p image and outputs Blu-ray discs in a true film-like 24 frames per second. The HDMI 1.3a output terminal supports Deep Color.
